Blogging about print for one of Nottingham's best design agencies

One of the things I love about this job is the variety.

If it’s not writing website copy for companies as diverse as birth doulas, florists, cider makers, IT start-ups or bridal retailers (more about these in later blogs). It might be coming up with emotive headlines for the RSPCA, creating teacher training recruitment campaigns for UCL in London or even blog writing.

The blogging is a really nice change, particularly when it’s in an area where I do have some background knowledge. So it was a lovely surprise when I was contacted by The New Fat in Nottingham and asked to come up with a list of suggested blog headlines around print. If they liked one or two, I’d get to write the full blog so it was a decent challenge.

The New Fat are one of Nottingham’s more recognised creative design and brand communication specialists. Since setting up in 1999, they have worked with clients like B&Q, Bombardier and Penguin Books, providing fresh, original, innovative design to develop and communicate these brands effectively.

Now, I know as much about print as the next copywriter – which is slightly more than the agency receptionist according to most art directors. But I’ve been in the business for almost 40 years, I cut my copywriting teeth on print and DM, so I’ve got quite a bit of information, know-how and industry nous tucked away somewhere.

The task was to dig it out and update my knowledge with online research of the latest trends and developments in print. Contrary to popular digital opinion, print hasn’t died a gruesome death but is actually making a strong comeback. It’s now being seen as the perfect complement to online campaigns – more tactile, longer lasting and even more trusted than many online messages.

Anyway, I sent over a selection of suggested blog headlines and these are the first two that were picked. If you want to know why print is making a comeback, and how versatile and effective it can be – read on. And why not try using it more alongside email, social media and blogging….
